Catching Up With The Kitties Of Tabby's Place

Today I took a long overdue trip to visit my furry furriends at Tabby's Place! The no-kill, cage free sanctuary isn't too far away from where I live, and I've been meaning to make the time to go visit one of their littlest new residents, Dot!

Development Director Angela Townsend greeted me warmly upon my arrival, and walked me to the suites to introduce me to some of the new additions since my last visit. On a rainy day like today, we encountered plenty of content kitties curled up in cozy cat trees, cubbies, and beds throughout the sanctuary. I also caught up with Natalie, my ginger kitty friend who turned me into a chair the last time I saw her (and did the same thing again today when I dared to kneel down and say hello to another cat). We also had a wonderful time visiting with the affectionate felines of the FIV+ suite, including Nuttin, a scruffy looking 13-year-old cancer survivor who has managed to keep trucking along despite a slew of chronic medical conditions, and Edward, a purry Cerebellar Hypoplasia kitty.

Dot

Next, we returned to the lobby to meet Dot, who at eight months old is still tinier than you'd imagine. I had a hard time getting a picture of her because she moves around so fast, which is astounding considering that she was born with spina bifida, and is unable to use her back legs. Veterinarians said that her internal birth defects were "incompatible with life," but obviously, baby Dot did not get the memo. Today, she had a fine time chasing Peachy around the lobby, and trying to get away from the cat-arazzi (a.k.a. me)! It's mesmerizing to watch her, especially once she stares up at you with those impossibly huge and expressive eyes. What a miracle that not only has she survived, but is so healthy and full of life, despite her disabilities! Dot still has a long road ahead of her, but it's comforting to know that she is getting all of the care and support she needs at Tabby's Place, and will know nothing but love for the rest of her life.

Angela also let me know that Tabby's Place is having a fundraiser this the month to help raise money for The Linda Fund. The Linda Fund will provide the neediest cats, like Dot, with emergency medical care, and was named after a three-week-old kitten who suffered horrible injuries and required emergency care to save her life. Happily, Linda was adopted into a loving home in 2011, but her story exemplifies the Linda Fund: nurturing sick and injured cats so they can flourish. If you've ever considered making a donation to Tabby's Place, now would be a great time. For every dollar pledged through the end of the May, benefactors will match it, thus doubling your contribution!

Despite the gloomy weather, one cannot leave Tabby's Place in a bad mood. Once again, I drove home feeling happy, and grateful that there are wonderful people in this world who dedicate their lives to the well-being of animals who would not make on their own. I am sincerely humbled by anyone who works or volunteers in the world of animal rescue, whose amazing stories I come across day after day while writing this blog. Thank you to them for all that they do to help save lives, one kitty at a time.

Would Dot benefit from a kitty wheel chair- there was a great story featured in Cute Overload a month ago about a border collie born with deformed front legs who got wheels from a company that specializes only in animal wheels: http://bangordailynews.com/slideshow/disabled-border-collie-wakes-up-happy-every-day/
