Cat ladies have been taking a lot of crap lately, but guess what? Being a cat lover is awesome. At least designers Charlotte Olympia, Lanvin, French Connection, Chloe, and Chanel (to name a few), think so. So do billion dollar brands like Sprint, Skittles, Dairy Queen, and Samsung. When Katy Perry tweets about Kitty Purry, it becomes a trending topic on Twitter. And when Jack the cat goes missing at JFK Airport, thousands of men and women come together to create awareness and bring him home.
Sure there's Boo the dog on Facebook, but where's the canine equivalent of Maru? Keyboard Cat? Nyan Cat? How popular is I Has A Hot Dog (yes it exists) next to I Can Has Cheezburger? While I admit it's true that there's an overwhelming majority of cat loving ladies out there, believe it or not, MEN LIKE CATS TOO (many cute ones, in fact). And when it comes to the image of the pathetic, spinster cat lady, I'm just wondering: How many "sexy" dog costumes do you see vs. sexy kitties?
The point is, liking cats is cool, dare I say trendy, and still, the media acts like cat ladies are some foreign minority that must be mocked and reviled at all costs. However, with the wealth of cats infiltrating popular culture, and the firm knowledge that men and women can love cats (and/or dogs) equally, the next time someone wants to call you a cat lady, crazy or otherwise, please join me in proudly proclaiming, "Damn right I am!"
