Cat Wood Carvings by Bryn Perrott

Yogurt the hairless cat. 2013

I'm always on the lookout for artists who are able to capture cats in unique and interesting ways, and was recently blown away by the discovery of Bryn Perrott, and her incredible wood carvings. Bryn's work, which evokes vintage tattoo flash, features skulls, religious iconography, dogs, demons, and feline designs that are so intricate, it's hard to believe they're made out of wood.

Perrott has been making wood carvings for 15 years, but only turned it into a business more recently. Each piece takes her five to eight hours to complete, which includes drawing, garage work, painting, carving and clear coating.

Bryn and Mole

On the topic of cats, Bryn tells me: "Cats! where do I start!? They're the best. I've had them my whole life. My family is a cat family. I have two of my own, Mothra who's 12-years-old and Mole who is three. I guess always having them around, they became the subject of drawings, paintings and now carvings."

To check out more of Bryn's work, visit her website (www.deerjerk.com), or follow her on Instagram at deerjerk. She works primarily on commission, so if you have a question or would like to make an order, email her at orders(at)deerjerk(dot)com. "I'm open to almost anything!" she says. "Especially cats."

Street Pussy Photoblog Captures Cats About Town

As a connoisseur of fine feline street photography, I'm totally down with Street Pussy, the UK-based Tumblr dedicated to the art of capturing cats on camera. The blog's creators, Yogi and Simon, recently opened up to me about how they started taking pictures of kitties, and also revealed their favorite cat photography moment, and just how they came up with that controversial name.

Read on for more!

On what inspired them to start a feline photoblog:

The idea came about because Yogi's motivation for her fashion photography course was waning, and she wanted to find a subject that she was passionate about to start a more long term project. I suggested that since she liked cats so much (yet unfortunately can't have her own, due to our house rules/busy lifestyle), she should photograph cats on the streets - there are plenty around after all, and you can give them plenty of love and attention whilst getting the pictures. We were also inspired by one of our favourite photographers, Alec Soth (of the Magnum Picture Agency) who said,  "If in your heart of hearts you want to take pictures of kitties, take pictures of kitties."

On where they take their photos:

Fortunately, the first time we went out looking for cats to photograph we found a really playful cat who was very photogenic, and that provided the motivation that we could make the concept work in real life. A few months later, we came up with the name and by then had enough material to start the blog, and it all snowballed from there.

We try to photograph any cats that we see, but mainly we have to go looking for them in our free time - funny enough, we now tend to categorise areas depending on how good they would potentially be for cats; estates and suburbia are very good, rich and country areas not so much.

Often when we're photographing cats in a new area people tend to be quite suspicious of us following the cats around, or lying down on the street to photograph a cat under a car - so that can be interesting! We began in Wales and then moved to London,  so usually stick close by to where we live. London is so big, however, so we are gradually working our way around!

On the name Street Pussy:

The name has been quite important to our identity, as it adds a certain edge to the blog that hopefully separates us somewhat from the many blogs of 'cute' cats out there (not that there's anything wrong with those blogs obviously, it's just been done a lot).

Whilst many of our photographs are quite cute, we do try our hardest to make all of our pictures photographically interesting as well - being influenced by photographers such as William Eggleston and Rinko Kawauchi, in particular. We also largely draw on our photographic backgrounds - both having studied photography (Simon - Documentary Photography/Yogi - Fashion Photography) at the University of Wales, Newport (which is where we met).

On their favorite cat photography moment:

When we went cat hunting back at Simon's parents hometown in Hertfordshire, there are a lot of cats there and we were hoping to spot some. It was getting dark so we decided to use our Canon SLR caneras with big flashes, but unfortunately cats don't really do well with giant digital cameras (from experience), and they either hid or ran away.

Anyway, we were on our way home when a blue flashing light went by and a police car sped up to us...the police officer got out of the car and stopped us. He began asking questions explaining that some of the local residents had seen flashing and thought were sussing the area out as thieves or potential burglars. The fact that we had to explain to this officer we were simply photographing cats was funny enough, we then showed him our cameras and he had a chuckle. He ran our names through their system as a formality, and we learned that day that perhaps photographing at night was not necessarily wise in small towns.

The duo have managed to photograph over 280 kitties in two years (their favorite shot can be seen above), and don't plan on stopping as long as there are cats to be snapped. Visit the Street Pussy blog, or follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for more of the finest felines around London Town, and beyond.

Cats That Look Like Pin-Up Girls Blows The Lid Off The Cat Modeling World

Pin-up girls and pussycats go together like peas and carrots, so it's surprising it took so long for someone to create Cats That Look Like Pinup Girls, a new Tumblr dedicated to revealing the similarities between the two.

Maru's innocent gaze never looked so scandalous as when placed next to a saucy sailor, while other shots prove that flexibility and a well-groomed coat are the key to getting the purrfect shot.

So who is the mastermind that matched these pretty kitties with their pin-up counterparts? The blog was created by the owners of Hurly Burly, an Australian clothing store that specializes in goth, rockabilly, punk, and pin-up looks.

Visit Cats That Look Like Pinup Girls for more whisker raising comparisons!

Good Reads: The Fluffington Post

Tired of puff pieces being shoved down your throat by the traditional media? Then why not go straight to the source! My most trusted news website is The Fluffington Post, "your #1 source for breaking news and investigative journalism FLUFFY ANIMALS."

FluffPo has been around for awhile, but I've recently been getting into their patented blend of cute animal pictures mixed with non-sensationalistic feline reporting. While not all of their posts revolve around kitties (dogs, squirrels, and ferrets are featured, too), it's always important to see how the other half (or in this case, other species) lives.

I picked out a few of my favorite entries below, but I'd encourage you to visit FluffPo for yourself - lest risking embarrassment when you're out with your friends and have to sheepishly admit that, no, you haven't heard of Zoey, the hamster chef who landed her own series on Food Network.

Senator Korbi, a DemoCat from Colorado, has proposed legislation that would change the name of Saturday to “Caturday.”

“With so many Americans working second jobs on the weekend to make ends meet, it is imperative to remind them that those two days are for fun and relaxing,” says Erin Stackhouse, communications director for Sen. Korbi’s office. “The senator’s bill will do just that.”

However, critics from both parties have rebuked the bill, calling it a “self-serving farce.”

“With the national debt at $15 trillion and many Americans still out of work, this is not the kind of bill we should be spending valuable legislative time on,” a representative from House Speaker John Boehner’s office tells The Fluffington Post.

Images have surfaced via MEOW! magazine depicting a famous Australian cat caught in what appears to be a compromising position. Spokespeople for the cat are calling this a “sick stunt to sell copies of a publication and prop up a dying industry,” while editors at the magazine say that the cat’s fame means she lives in public and photos like these are fair game.

Those interested in the full, uncensored photo set should visit the MEOW! website.

According to sources, a kitten tree in Thousand Oaks, CA has produced a bumper crop of one kitten. ”I never thought I’d see the day,” said owner Troy Atkins. ”Seriously, I thought the lady who sold this to me and told me it was a kitten tree was off her nut. But now… I mean, results don’t lie!”

New Blog Compiles Correspondence To Felines Of The Future

(foshie)

Dear Future Cat is a new Tumblr blog dedicated to collecting the often funny, sometimes surprisingly heartfelt notes readers have submitted to their future felines. I've picked out a few of my favorites below, and you can read the rest here.

While they're meant to be written for a cat you don't have yet, several of them could be directed towards your "current" kitty as well. :)

***

DEAR FUTURE CAT,
My friends and family have accepted that I'm having cats instead of children, so when you're on your way they're gonna throw me a kitty-shower. It will be the best day of my life.

DEAR FUTURE CAT,
I hate taking you to the vet as much as you hate going, but it’s for your own good. I want to make sure you’re healthy because I don’t know what I would do without you.

DEAR FUTURE CAT,
On Caturdays we wear pink.

DEAR FUTURE CAT,
Please lay off the catnip, we’re really concerned for your well-being.
We love you and we will support you through this.

DEAR FUTURE CAT,
Those cats in the cat food commercials ain’t got nothin’ on you. Please don’t let that image of a perfect cat affect your idea of beauty or your sense of self worth because to me, you will always be perfect.

DEAR FUTURE CAT,
I’m trying really hard to learn your language.
Meow, meow, meeeeow, mrau.

DEAR FUTURE CAT,
Please don’t scratch the sofa, if you’re upset you can come talk to me.

DEAR FUTURE CAT,
Even though I’m a vegetarian on your birthday I will cook you salmon because cats like salmon and I want you to be happy, even if you don’t know it’s your birthday.

DEAR FUTURE CAT,
If I come home smelling like another cat, please don’t get mad.
I was at a friend’s house and they have a cat.
I was not cheating on you.
You are my favorite.
You are my only.

DEAR FUTURE KITTEN,
I can’t wait to watch you grow up into a lovely adult cat.
When you are grown I will show you your baby pictures and we will cuddle and I will laugh and you will purr about the good old days.

Not Even The Beatles Are Safe From The Kitten Covers

Cats are known to rock out every now and then, and cats replacing song lyrics has already been done, so the natural progression of this feline musical phenomena is The Kitten Covers, a new Tumblr dedicated to photoshopping kittens into instantly recognizable album art (disappointingly, not kittens singing cover songs). The single serving blog features tiny tabbies sitting in for everyone from The Beatles to Björk, and in some cases arguably improving off of the original designs.

I'm not sure if they take requests, but I'd love to see them work a kitty into Back to Black or Tragic Kingdom.

Ryan Gosling Embraces The Disneyland Cats Within

A few weeks ago I investigated Ryan Gosling's claims of an "army of cats" that invade Disneyland after hours, and now a new Tumblr, Ryan Gosling Disneyland Cats, has capitalized on his quirky fixation by photoshopping the Lars and the Real Girl hottie into theme park scenes with some kitty pals.

Hey girl, like you needed any further proof that cats can make two things that are already awesome on their own even better.
