Cat Accidentally Raises Over $1,000 For Charity, All By Lifting Her Little Paw

The face that launched over $1,000 in donations

When Redditor Akslfak's cat Refurb (short for Refurbished, after she lost one of her legs as a kitten), made it to the front page of photo sharing site imgur, he had a good laugh about it, and then turned the tortie's 15 minutes of fame into over $1,000 in donations for animal shelters around the world.

After taking the story of his cat's unexpected popularity to internet forum Something Awful, another user joked that they would pay for an autograph from the famous feline. Thinking it was a joke, Akslfak sarcastically replied that if he sent proof of making a $10 donation to a local shelter, he would send him Refurb's pawtograph in the mail.

Much to the surprise of skeptic's everywhere, the autograph seeker posted proof of the donation right away, spurning others to make the same request. Less than a week later, there were 35 donations from around the U.S., and six different countries across four continents.

The "Refurbographs" were created using washable non-toxic ink, and pressed on to custom made postcards. Akalfak says that Refurb "put up with the paw print making like a champ"... probably because she knew it was for a good cause!

"This is by a wide margin the silliest thing that I have ever done, and yet I don't feel that silly about having helped out some animals that need it," Akslfak says. "However, I will feel silly when I go to the post office with a postcard of my cat's paw print, asking for postage to Australia."

After raising $1,300 and running out of custom cards, Akslfak and Refurb are shelving the project for now, but they hope people will still be inspired to donate money to their local animal rescue organizations.

Adoptable Kitten Makes Headlines After Chicago Tribune Homepage Mistake

The Chicago Tribune made headlines of their own yesterday when an error on their homepage caused a curious site for several minutes:

While the image of a kitten along with the word "test" typed over and over looked like a sure sign of a feline takeover, Tribune Social Media and SEO Manager Amy Guth revealed to Gizmodo that a routine CMS test was the much more mundane reason for the gaffe.

Benton

The technical error was quickly spotted and resolved, but as it turns out, the story doesn't end there. The featured feline wasn't just a random stock photograph, but rather one of the adoptable animals featured in the paper's "Pets in need of homes" gallery.

Guth tells Gizmodo, "This cat, Benton, is up for adoption, though I now understand he’s become a very popular fellow in the hours since the front page error. Perhaps our mistake will at least turn into Benton’s good fortune."

The tiny tabby was born around May 1, and is currently in the care of Feline Friends in Chicago:

This tiny little macho man likes to be petted, but he doesn't have time for lots of snuggling—he's a ladies' man. Benton spends a lot of his time playing with, protecting and grooming the girl cats under his guardian's care. But don't worry, this suave little fella doesn't neglect his own good looks; that lovely silver-striped fur is fabulous. Come give this kitten a closer look; he loves the attention.

If you or someone you know is interested in adopting this famous little fella, check out his Petfinder profile for more information.

Curious Kitty Caught Hacking Into His Human's Computer

Redditor spunwasi wanted to get to the bottom of who was waking up his computer when he wasn't around, so he set up software to snap a picture of the perpetrator.

The result? This hilarious shot of 20-pound Maine Coon, Fizzy Womack, caught in the act. Check out another pic of the cuddly culprit here.

PR Agency Seeks Cat Video Technologist

(Click here to view full size)

Hunting for a new job can be a soul sucking proposition, as you pour through online listings in hopes of finding your dream position. But every once in awhile a gem comes up (remember the Feline Lap Surrogate?), that's tailor made for the tech savvy feline enthusiast.

Taylor Herring, an award-winning public relations firm based in London, is currently seeking a Cat Video Technologist to join their rapidly expanding content creation team.

Instead of posting the opening to some boring job site or (horrors) an actual printed publication, they took to Twitter to share the good news. While the title might be slightly embellished, the job itself is very much real.

In addition to relevant skills and experience, candidates for the position should possess a "creative mind and obsessive social media habits," along with a knowledge of why Ryan Gosling won't eat his breakfast, and why Tom Selleck just can't get enough of waterfalls and sandwiches.

Qualified job seekers have until June 21 at 5 p.m. to submit their resume, along with a 6-second Vine selling their skills. Viewing Maru's entire video catalog isn't required, but recommended, just to be safe.

Cat Meme To Do List Reminds You To Buy A Boat, Among Other Things

As someone who can be a bit of a procrastinator (a procatinator?), sometimes all it takes is a good list to keep me on track. Enter TodoCat, a handy site, inspired by the I Should Buy a Boat cat meme, where a serious looking feline wearing a suit reads a newspaper and contemplates life over a cup of coffee. The screenshot was originally taken from the Bjork video for  "Triumph of a Heart", but gained popularity last year, when it was posted to reddit with the caption, "I should buy a boat".

According to TodoCat's creator, the site functions as "a Sophisticated Cat meme todo list. Relentless organization is the first step to feline elegance and/or maritime freedom."

In case you aren't in the boat buying market, you can make a list of any activities you "should" do, from watching more cat videos, to eating more kale. The list gets saved in your browser, but you can also sign up for a free account, in case you find yourself away from the computer, and need to remember to pick up some extra cat food on the way home from work.

Aside from hanging out with your kitty and reading Catsparella, what should you do today?

Cat Who Sits Up Like A Human Ponders Life Beyond The Scratching Post

Last week, Reddit user Kagrabular caused an online sensation when he shared some pictures of his friend's tuxedo cat, who has an unusually adorable way he likes to sit:

"The adoption place told my friend that his cat's back legs were slightly malformed," he wrote. "They didn't know if it was from a past injury, or if he was born that way. He sits a little weird sometimes, and can't quite run normal. But he is in great health, and loves to stoically look out the window."

Be still my heart. Those dangling kitty toes get me every time.

Careers For Cat Lovers: Feline Lap Surrogate

You know how they say when something sounds too good to be true, it probably is? Well, that's likely the case here, but a girl can dream that this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity actually exists. A recent (now defunct) Craigslist ad based out of Columbus put the feelers out for a cozily named "Feline Lap Surrogate," charged with letting an 18-year-old cat sit on their lap for four hours a day, while its beleaguered owner tries to get some work done. Oh yeah, the pay is $15 an hour.

I have to say, as someone whose cat enjoys stymying my online activities by splaying herself across the keyboard, the idea of a cat distractor sounds pretty legit. Requirements include experience handling senior cats and no allergies (natch), plus you'll even be provided with breakfast and lunch for your troubles.

My fondest wish is that this listing actually panned out and some lucky cat person is cuddling up with the insatiable lap-hog as we speak, but dollars to donuts says the job didn't last long, once the original poster realized their kitty preferred its human's lap over an imitation lap top.

Cat Shaming Website Exposes Feline Misdeeds

After the meteoric rise of Dog Shaming, the Tumblr where owners submit images of their remorseful pooches confessing their most embarrassing secrets, it was inevitable that a blog where cat owners could "tattle-tale on their naughty nyans" would emerge in its wake.

The only problem is, while dogs are actually sorry for their indiscretions (or rather, good at looking sorry with those sad, puppy-dog eyes), cats know nothing of this emotion we call "shame." Many of their misdeeds revolve around indiscriminate puking, peeing, and early morning breakfast requests, which most kitties consider to be perfectly socially acceptable behavior.

Check out a few of my favorite "confessions" here, and visit Cat Shaming for a deeper look at the lighthearted side of feline humiliation.

'KittyCat Hijack' Turns Any Website Into A Virtual Feline Utopia

How do you make just about any website better? Temptations Canada recently rolled out a wacky new browser add-on that will whip any online destination into a "feline frenzy" with their cracked out cat treats. (And with all of the racket it generates, it might bring a few real cats running, too.)

To access it, simply visit the Temptations Facebook page, and drag the bag of virtual treats to your bookmarks bar. Next, visit any website (like your favorite cat blog, for example), and click the 'KittyCat Hijack' bookmark. Start shaking the bag of treats to capture the kitties' attention, and next thing you know, it's a KittyCat Hijack! (There's an instructional video here if you need help). One shake yields a lone kitty peeking out through the middle of the page, while several generate a psychedelic collection of fun loving felines, plus a musical soundtrack accompanied by purrs and meows.

Silly? Sure, but still tons of fun. I've already "tested" it out on Catsparella, People, Jezebel, Catster, and USA.gov.

The Perils Of Acquiring Kitty Kisses

If you follow me on Tumblr, you may have seen me reblog this comic by Madéleine Flores that purrfectly illustrates the plight of the over-affectionate cat owner.

As a self-professed cat kiss addict, I too aim my kisses towards the sweet smelling spot right on top of their heads. Sometimes they go for it, and let me indulge in a round of superfluous smooches, while other times I'm reminded with a polite paw that the kissing booth is closed!

Artist Behind Fat Cat Enhanced Masterpieces Shares Her Inspiration

You may have encountered her fat cat enhanced masterpieces floating around the internet over the past few months, but who is the brains behind the pudgy pumpkin-colored puss paintings? The Daily Mail recently uncovered the real story behind Russian artist Svetlana Petrova, and her now infamous cat, Zarathustra who has been popping up in classic art from the likes of Da Vinci, Dali, and Monet.

The cat belonged to Petrova's late mother, and it was friends who inspired her to incorporate the expressive feline into her work.

She tells The Mail: "To imagine how it would look I decided to Photoshop the cat into a painting and it was Rembrandt's Danae. It looked good so I carried on doing them. Zarathustra is a natural born model. He adores adopting different poses, sometimes very feminine and coquettish, and makes different faces.

Then I started to do special photo sessions having in mind paintings which I wanted to Photoshop. It is the most difficult and longest part of work because he must be in the right position, with the correct expression, and sometimes it takes months to take the right photo."

While Svetlana's website, Great Artists' Mews, has exploded in popularity, it seems as though the offline art community has not been as welcoming to her unique style of feline artifice.

"'I thought that I could hold an exhibition, but gallery owners said: "This is not art, this is just cats," she says.

Who's to say it's not both?

Check out more brilliant pictures of Zarathustra over at Great Artists' Mews.

Purrfect Cat Facts Texting Prank

(Click here to see the larger version)

A year's subscription to a service that delivers "cat facts" to your phone every hour, on the hour? Sounds great to me! Unfortunately, Reddit user frackyou's little cousin didn't think so. When he posted his number on Facebook saying he was bored, his older relative couldn't help but pull the "purrfect prank" on him.

In other news, would anyone like to help me fund this in real life?

Cat With A Face On Its Belly

One Japanese family discovered a great surprise when their cat's unusual markings - a second face on its abdomen - were revealed in a photograph. The kitty's owner, Ishii Yachiyo Sakado Sone, tells Yomiuri Online that the male cat's name is Myakotan, and that he was picked up by her son at the canal several years ago.

Does your kitty have any cool markings?

Procrastinate Your Way to the End of the Internet with Procatinator

A recent study by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project showed that over 58% of adults admit to going online for no particular reason. With that in mind, I present to you the Procatinator, a website seemingly created with the explicit purpose of throwing you down an internet k-hole, where you're destined to emerge hours later with kittens in your eyes, and a song in your heart.

In the spirit of having a willing desire to waste time on the web, the site offers up neverending, full-screen gifs of cats, paired with the most awesome, wacky, and random songs you can think of. Of course, like anything, some procatinators are better than others, but my my absolute favorite (so far) is of these little flower kittens, hypnotically singing and swaying along to the long-forgotten early 90s hit, "Dur dur d'être bébé! (It's Tough to Be a Baby)" by French singer, Jordy. Believe me when I say I could literally sit and watch this for the rest of my life.

"Dur dur d'être bébé!"

Visit Procatinator here to experience your own deadly dose of pointless internet fun.

UPDATE: Craigslist Posting Offering Up Your Dream Cat Apartment is a Delightful Hoax

I originally posted this ridiculously amusing Craigslist posting for a D.C.-area cat-friendly summer sublet late last week, but it was subsequently eaten by Blogger in last week's outage.

Fortunately, I can re-post it now with a timely update, courtesy of dcist, who have brought the story to its obvious conclusion by confirming that the ad was indeed a hoax (and a charming one, at that). The original poster, Fred Decatt, (a man! take that everyone who assumed it was a "crazy cat lady"!) updated his personal blog on Friday, with an exposé of the incident, which started out as an experiment to see why it's so difficult to find a decent summer sublet in D.C.

Cousin Garth and Horatio

Decatt's post also includes some of the more humorous exchanges he had with people who emailed him expressing interest in the apartment, along with his silly responses, which in once case involved a list of "screening questions" including, "All 16 cats decide they want to be petted/sit on you at the same time. How do you divide your attentions?" He also sent the same respondent the amazing (fake) picture above of his "Cousin Garth" holding Horatio the "friendly, mild-mannered" cat.

It's fun to note that the "16 cat sublet" was not Decatt's first foray into Craigslist "tomfoolery." He also garnered a similar response last year, when he tried to sell a snake named "Hissers" on the online classified site.

The worst part about this whole thing is coming to terms with the fact that the three-month long Danish Cat Convention doesn't really exist.

Original Craigslist Ad:

For sublet, June 3rd - August 25th. 1 BR in a 2BR apartment in Dupont circle. Furnished, all utilities included.

I will be away for the summer in Denmark attending the summer-long Danish Cat Convention. You will share the apartment with 16 well mannered cats and 2 Roombas. The cats will occupy the other bedroom, and the roombas will be on patrol to help keep the hair situation under control. I will ask that you refill the cats' automated food dispensers once a week, and clean the Roomba filters every three days or so. Below is a brief description of the housecatmates:

Polly - shy, quiet, tabby
Bitnum - playful, clawy
Lightning - slow, old
Lighting II - slow, young
Bebop - paranoid, jumpy
Cappy - sneaky, grouchy
Apina - knowledgeable, soft
Grobor - Incessant, loquacious
Kyle - stylish
Leesha - aged, engaged
Somtorious - idle
Gleebok - green-tinted
Horatio - friendly, mild-mannered
Bananana - a little off
Hoppy - jumpy
Duran - pensive

Roombas:
Gregor - Robotic, kitcheny
Sandra - Robotic, hallway-y
