Cat Accidentally Raises Over $1,000 For Charity, All By Lifting Her Little Paw

The face that launched over $1,000 in donations

When Redditor Akslfak's cat Refurb (short for Refurbished, after she lost one of her legs as a kitten), made it to the front page of photo sharing site imgur, he had a good laugh about it, and then turned the tortie's 15 minutes of fame into over $1,000 in donations for animal shelters around the world.

After taking the story of his cat's unexpected popularity to internet forum Something Awful, another user joked that they would pay for an autograph from the famous feline. Thinking it was a joke, Akslfak sarcastically replied that if he sent proof of making a $10 donation to a local shelter, he would send him Refurb's pawtograph in the mail.

Much to the surprise of skeptic's everywhere, the autograph seeker posted proof of the donation right away, spurning others to make the same request. Less than a week later, there were 35 donations from around the U.S., and six different countries across four continents.

The "Refurbographs" were created using washable non-toxic ink, and pressed on to custom made postcards. Akalfak says that Refurb "put up with the paw print making like a champ"... probably because she knew it was for a good cause!

"This is by a wide margin the silliest thing that I have ever done, and yet I don't feel that silly about having helped out some animals that need it," Akslfak says. "However, I will feel silly when I go to the post office with a postcard of my cat's paw print, asking for postage to Australia."

After raising $1,300 and running out of custom cards, Akslfak and Refurb are shelving the project for now, but they hope people will still be inspired to donate money to their local animal rescue organizations.

Fresh Step Unveils Knit Cat Hat To Benefit The ASPCA

Cat-Inspired Knit Hat

Fresh Step has once again teamed up with the ASPCA to help fill your closet with cat fashion for a good cause!

After collaborating with Kellie Pickler last year on a country music inspired cat sweater, the litter makers have switched their focus to a feline-themed accessory, in the form of a cat hat by Korean knitwear designer, Sunghee Bang.

The chic popcorn knit cap is a subtle mix of black and grey, and features a striking pair of pointy ears that will keep you warm all winter. The limited edition hat is currently available from the ASPCA online store for $39.99, with 100% of the purchase price going to benefit the animal rescue and welfare organization.

AnnaLynne McCord and her cat, Buni

To lend a little star power to the proceedings, the hat will officially be unveiled this weekend by famous cat lover, AnnaLynne McCord, in Park City, Utah, where the "90210" actress will be in town to introduce the five finalists from the Fresh Step Catdance Film Festival competition.

Starting on Jan. 20, fans will be able to view all of the official cat video selections from the film fest online, and cast a ballot for their favorite to win $10,000. As an added incentive to participate, all voters will also have a chance to win prizes, including Fresh Step coupons, and the charitable chapeau.

Architects For Animals Project Showcases Hip Housing For NYC's Feral Cats

Dana Edelson

When you think of New York City's great landmarks, buildings like The Empire State, Chrysler, and Guggenheim, all come to mind. However, a group of prestigious architects from around the city have teamed up to create some very important pint sized designs, all for the benefit of feral kitties.

Architects for Animals, now in its third year, is an initiative held in cooperation with the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, to help bring awareness to the city's homeless cat population.

Since cats need winter shelters to help protect them from freezing temperatures, the architectural teams are tasked with building stylish, innovative outdoor shelters, that are put on display, and ultimately donated to community cat caretakers around the city.

This year's "Giving Shelter" benefit will be held on Thursday, January 10 at the Steelcase Showroom in NYC. Admission is a $20 donation ($10 for Certified TNR Caretakers) and includes the debut of this year's designs, hors d'oeuvres, and drinks. If you can't make it to the event, online donations to the New York City Feral Cat Initiative are also accepted, and appreciated. The program aims to humanely reduce the number of community cats in NYC, and improve the plight of those cats currently living outdoors through the humane, non-lethal method of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).

Philanthropic 10-Year-Old Donates Allowance To Help Homeless Kitties

Evan

One young cat lover named Evan has inspired generosity and hope, after proving that compassion for cats can come at any age.

The 10-year-old has displayed an uncharacteristic sense of charity, by saving up his allowance for the past three years to donate to his local animal rescue, City Kitties. Evan's cat, Macha, came from the West Philadelphia-area organization, and in 2009, he delivered his first donation, along with this handwritten note:

Dear City Kitties,

My name is Evan. I am 7 years old. And guess what?... I LOVE cats! They are my favorite animals, and I got my cat at City Kitties, as well! THANK YOU for letting me get my new cat! Thank you, City Kitties!

Sincerely,
Evan

P.S. I get an allowance every week and I chose to make a donation to you. I love that you help cats find homes. I saved this money to help you help cats.

Evan and Macha in 2010

The following year, Evan picked up a picture of a foster cat named Calvin at a City Kitties art auction. That summer, the loyal fundraiser eschewed a lemonade stand in favor of selling figs from his family's tree, and raised $86 to help Calvin and homeless cats like him.

Over the next few months, Calvin had become a favorite with the boy, and his dad contacted City Kitties to see if they could help him with a surprise. Evan was told that Calvin was getting adopted and that they were going to say goodbye, but when they arrived, Evan found out that Calvin's new home would be his own!

His 2011 letter read:

"...And a happy new year...Let's hope it's a good one, without any fear." - Happy Xmas - John Lennon

Dear City Kitties,

I hope you have had a great year! I have given my annual holiday donation with this letter. I am enclosing....$97.00! I saved up a lot of money this year! How is Clark Kent? I hope he is getting better! I am so happy that people like you are around to save abandoned kitties from danger! I want to help you do that and I hope other people will help, too!

Fondly,
Evan S.

*P.S.* Our City Kitties are doing great - (despite Macha playing roughly with Calvin and Elsa.)

Now 10, Evan's most recent letter arrived at the cat charity last month, accompanied by his largest donation to date. He saved $110, which was matched by his parents, for a grand total of $220.

He writes:

"Let there be peace on earth."

December 15, 2012

Hello all City Kitties Staff -

I hope that you guys have had a great year 2012! As I do every year, I am making my holiday donation. This year it will be $110.00 ($CX). It is my first year donating a three-digit dollar amount. (When I was 1 digit years old, I donated a two-digit dollar amount. Now that I'm 2 digits years old, I donated a three-digit dollar amount.) I will keep donating to help save abandoned kitties from danger.

Love,
Evan

*P.S. Do you like my cursive?
*P.P.S. Our City Kitties are doing well. Thankfully, they are not terrorizing the house anymore.

Yes, Evan, we like your cursive very much, but not as much as your devotion to helping cats in need! The caring 10-year-old has inspired countless others with his generous spirit, and shows how anyone can make a difference, big or small.

City Kitties is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, no-kill, volunteer-run rescue dedicated to saving and improving the lives of stray cats and kittens in West Philadelphia. To learn more, visit their website at citykitties.org.

Buy a Mr. Bojangles Ornament to Benefit a Diabetic Kitty in Need

Mr. Bojangles Felt Kitty Ornament

Looking to add a bit of feline festivity to your tree, and help out a good cause at the same time? Etsy sellers Monster & The Squirrel are selling the Mr. Bojangles Felt Kitty ornament this holiday season to help defray the costs of their beloved kitty's medical bills after he was recently diagnosed with feline diabetes. Feline diabetes is not curable, however it is highly treatable with proper care. Left untreated, the increasingly common disease in cats can lead to worsening symptoms, or even death.

From the item description:

"Mr. Bojangles has the biggest eyes you've ever seen and the biggest heart. He loves hanging out with people and trying to get attention from his BFF pitbull friend Otis. Mr. Bojangles is the sweetest little furball around!

Our sweet kitty was diagnosed with feline diabetes a few months ago and has been undergoing treatment. All proceeds go towards Mr. Bojangles insulin, syringes, special food, and vet visits. It has been very hard financially and emotionally on us. We have sold a lot of our stuff just so Bojangles will have his medication and special food."

If you're interested in contributing to the cause, the Mr. Bojangles Kitty Special Edition Ornament can be purchased here for $10.00.
