Neko Flies Cat Toy Review & Giveaway!

Priscilla eyeing the kragonfly.

My kitties are big fans of wand toys that they can hunt, pounce, and leap for, so when Neko Flies recently asked if we'd like to test out some of their products, I knew I couldn't say no without seriously hissing Charlie and Priscilla off.

Neko Flies was started in 2007 by founder Ellen Tsuyuki, who decided to create a toy that would measure up to her cats needs. After working with her trusty feline advisors, Nekochan, Chiquita, Timmy and Bubba, she created the unique line of interactive toys tailored to make both kitties and their owners happy. Neko Flies are touted for being realistic looking with lifelike movements, and appealing to a cat's natural hunting instinct. All of the toys promise a fun, interactive bonding experience for you and your cat, plus they come with super cute names like "foxifur kittenator" and "kattipede."

In case you haven't noticed, I've been a little Vine-happy lately (follow me @catsparella!), and couldn't resist taking a few videos of Priscilla getting her kittenish swagger on. She might be 12-years-old, but homegirl doesn't look a day over 8.

Here she is testing out the Foxifur Kittenator with rod:

Priscilla pouncing for the Foxifur Kittenator (Thank to my mom for the Homer Simpson-esque commentary in this one).

And giving the Kragonfly attachment a spin:

Going belly up for the Kragonfly attachment. As predicted, the "realistic gliding dragonfly that shimmers in the air!" was too much for her to resist.

Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium Presents The Cats' Whiskers KeepCup

Charlie enjoys an early morning chai

How would you enjoy drinking coffee, tea, hot chocolate and/or any other variety of hot beverages from a cute cup, while also doing a solid for the environment? Lauren Pears of Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium recently sent me The Cats' Whiskers KeepCup, a sustainably sourced, re-usable, and recyclable coffee cup alternative that can be used up to 1,500 times, or about the equivalent of four years of every day use.

The adorable 8 oz. BPA free cup is the purrfect size for taking your cup of joe on the go, and even has a little line inside delineating the 8 oz. mark. The top snaps on so you can sip while keeping your tea toasty, but my favorite feature is the bewhiskered silicone band that prevents your paws from getting burned.

Priscilla takes a suspicious sip

The cups are available in three colors: Plum/Cream, Plum/Black, and Black/Black - and if you think I agonized over which combination to get, you would be quite right.

Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium is scheduled to open later this year in London's East End, and promises to be a warm, comfortable place where patrons can play and cuddle up to one of their many resident cats.

The project made headlines in January after Pears started a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to turn her dream of opening a cat cafe into a reality. She managed to raise an incredible £109,510 (over $170,000 USD) to open Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium, which will be the first facility of its kind in London.

Visit Lady Dinah's website, or follow them on Facebook for more information on the progress of the cafe, or to buy a KeepCup of your own.

Disclosure: I received a Cats' Whiskers KeepCup for review, but all opinions and pensive pussycats portrayed in this post are my own.

Miaow.ie by Telekat: The Cat Video Toy For 21st Century Felines

Rodent Football!

You're probably already familiar with the concept of the "Cat Sitter," a VHS tape (and later DVD) that was basically the equivalent of Sesame Street for felines. Flash forward to 2013, and Miaow.ie by Telekat is a modern take on the cat video toy, designed for the technologically savvy feline who has everything, including a laptop and iPad.

Priscilla going in for the kill

The 88 minute video, designed to entertain and stimulate your cat, includes clips of birds chirping happily in front of a Nyan Cat-inspired screen, hamsters hitting the football field, and butterflies and fish flitting about. There's also a segment featuring sea monkeys flying through space, that's sure to have you questioning your sanity.

Charlie is transfixed!

I set up Miaow.ie on my laptop for Charlie and Priscilla to test out, and they immediately took notice. It was really funny to watch their little heads go back and forth, and observe them peering behind the monitor, trying to figure out where the noises were coming from!

Nyan Birds

You can sample all of the video clips on the Miaow.ie YouTube Channel for free, or download the full 88 minute HD video to the mp4 playing device of your choice for just $5. To learn more about Miaow.ie, visit their website at miaow.ie.

Disclosure: I received a free download of Miaow.ie by Telekat for review, but all curious cats contained in this post are my own.

Janchristie Christmas Kitty Nail Stickers

A few months ago I tried out some cool cat nail art stickers by Janchristie.com, so when the ladies recently asked if I wanted to check out their new Christmas kitty design, I jumped at the chance. The stickers are inexpensive, easy to put on (especially since I'm a pro now), and super cute (you can read a more in-depth review in my previous post).

The Christmas design, which features a kitty in a Santa hat, comes in a variety of colors and cat-types, including black cat (the design I'm wearing), black and white, ginger, kitten, and a variety of tabbies (check out the rest of their feline offerings here). I used a gold OPI polish (Glitzerland) as a base to add some sparkle before applying the stickers, and finished it all off with a clear top coat.

Bonus! From now until Jan. 31, order 4 sets of nail stickers from JanChristie.com, and they'll throw in an extra sheet for free if you mention Catsparella in the comments box. Me-wow!

Disclosure: Janchristie sent me stickers to review, but all thoughts, opinions, and candy canes expressed in this post are my own.

Handmade Ceramic Thirsty Cat Fountain Review

Cat tap? Don't mind if I do!

Drinking plenty of water is vital to the health of your cat, and as a responsible kitty owner, it's important to find ways to encourage them to drink. My friend Caroline Golon of Romeo the Cat recently had an article on Catster about 10 ways to get your finicky feline to slurp up, where her suggestions ranged from adding ice cubes to their food, to using a cat fountain. Since many cats find moving water exciting, fountains can encourage your feline to imbibe, while also supplying them with a cool, clean stream of H2O, that doesn't need to be replenished on a daily basis.

Thirsty Cat Fountains is an Etsy shop based out of Cambridge, NY, run by Keith Davitt and Jackie McKannay. Keith started the shop in 2010 after he realized that his cat, Bijou, preferred drinking water out the handmade fountains that he was creating, rather than out of his own water bowl. Their handmade, ceramic fountains are 100% food-safe and made out of high-quality pumps, copper, and glaze that contains no lead, or leaching from colorants or any other source. The carefully crafted pieces come in various colors and styles, and are an attractive alternative to other commercial fountains on the market.

Keith and Jackie recently sent Charlie and Priscilla the "Caribbean" fountain for review. Our fountain came with a pump, matching ceramic pump hide, copper spout and cat tap, carbon filter, instruction booklet, and a decorative ceramic shell designed to camouflage where the pump wire feeds through.

Assembly was as easy as plugging in the pump, filling the fountain with water, inserting the spout, and adding the carbon filter. The filter is supposed to last around a year, and the fountain requires cleaning about once a week, in a process that includes rinsing the pump, which is small and doesn't take very long. We enjoy the relaxing sounds the water makes as it continuously flows through the copper spout, but it can also be adjusted based on you and your cat's preferences.

Priscilla pauses for a cool, refreshing drink.

Although she's usually more timid, Priscilla was the first to venture over to the fountain, and took to it right away. She enjoys lapping up water from the generously sized bowl, and also licking it up directly from the cat tap. Charlie, on the other hand, was more cautious, and it's taking him longer to warm up to it.

Depending on your cat's inclinations, a Thirsty Cat Fountain can be a useful way to keep your kitties happy, healthy, and watered. The fountains also make tasteful accent pieces, and are a welcome addition to the decor any feline-friendly home.

Disclosure: Thirsty Cat Fountains provided me with a cat fountain for review, but all thoughts, opinions, and pink kitty tongues contained in this post are my own.

"A Cat in Paris" Movie Review and DVD Giveaway!

A Cat in Paris - Official Trailer

I first heard about "A Cat In Paris" when it was nominated alongside "Puss in Boots" as Best Animated Feature at the 2011 Academy Awards. Unfortunately, both feline-themed films lost the Oscar to a chameleon named Rango, but the critical acclaim led to a U.S. release of the French film, with voiceovers by Anjelica Huston, Marcia Gay Harden, and Matthew Modine.

In a world where digital animation often blurs the lines of reality, it's refreshing to see a hand-drawn film that manages to capture the depth of its characters without using fancy tricks. Director's Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol create a suspenseful feline film noir against the gorgeous backdrop of Paris, where cats and criminals prowl its rooftops together at night.

"A Cat in Paris" is a sophisticated children's film, that deals with themes of parental death, gangsters, guns, and even kidnapping, yet somehow still manages to remain heartwarming, and often funny. The main character is a girl named Zoe, whose beloved black cat Dino leads a double life as a house cat by day, and a cunning cat burglar's accomplice by night. Dino's interactions with the girl are often tender, as he acts as both her companion and protector. Then there's also Zoe's mother, Jeanne, a cop with a taste for vengeance against the man who killed her husband, a bumbling group of gangsters led by a man named Victor Costa, and Nico, the thief with a heart-of-gold, who inadvertently finds himself tangled in their web of intrigue.

The movie is ultimately a fast-paced adventure, with a plot you'd associate with a live-action film instead of an animated children's flick. The beautifully rendered characters and the city, a character in itself, work together to create a colorful tale that's ultimately about love, and the loyalty of one very special cat.

Kitty Cat Stickers By Janchristie Designer Nail Art

I've been itching to give kitty nail art a try, and recently came across some cool cat stickers from Janchristie Designer Nail Art, that I just couldn't resist!

I ordered three sheets last Tuesday (Black Cat, Tuxedo Cat, and Tabby Kitten), and they came on Saturday, which is awesome, especially since they were shipped from the UK! The price was pretty reasonable too - for three sheets of stickers plus shipping, I paid around $11 USD.

Each sheet has 24 stickers, and they also sent a small pack of practice designs to get me started. The stickers come on sheets of paper that don't look like will peel, but (to my relief!) they do. A small scissor is required to cut around each shape as closely as you can, making sure you leave enough of a border so you can lift it up from the backing. After cutting the design out, I used my nail to peel it up a tiny bit, before switching to a tweezer to remove the sticker from the backing. The tweezer is necessary because the stickers are extremely thin and very sticky, and if they curl up, or you place them in the wrong spot, it's likely you won't be able to get them off again in one piece.

Janchristie recommends applying a base coat or a pale nail polish color before getting started, so I opted for three coats of a pale pink (ULTA Baby Doll) before applying the decals. Once that was dry and the design was placed, I added a top coat to seal it on. They also suggest adding another coat every day or two to preserve the life of the sticker.

I've only had them on a day so far (they've been through one shower), and they are still looking good, but I see them more as a novelty item then as something I expect to last for a long time. I think they are really cute and unique, and come in a nice variety of styles. I went buck wild by putting a different cat on each finger, but I like the black cat and tabby kitten the best. I also think they would be nice to wear on just one nail as an accent.

Janchristie Designer Nail Art can be purchased here, and also check them out on Pinterest to see more examples of their designs.

Disclosure: I purchased the nail stickers on my own, and was not given any products or other form of compensation for this review.

sassyNpunk Boutique Glitter Kitty Ring

I love our friends at sassyNpunk Boutique! They recently sent me one of their glitter cat silhouette rings to try out, and it's just purrfect! The kitty is laser cut acrylic on an adjustable filigree band, which is cool because you can wear it on any finger you'd like. I love how sparkly and pretty it is - the cat's position looks like Priscilla laying with her paws tucked in (meatloaf style!). It also matches all the glittery nail polishes I've been rocking lately! (Right now I'm wearing Ulta's Ruby Slipper with Pinata-Yada-Yada as a topcoat).

They also sent me some super cute Charmmy Kitty Lollipop Earrings. In case ya didn't know, Charmmy Kitty is Hello Kitty's Persian cat (yes, she has a cat!). She wears a bow on her left ear, and her pendant holds the key to Hello Kitty's jewelry box. The lollipops look so real, I want to eat them up!

I had way too much fun with this photo shoot!

Be sure to check out sassyNpunk for all of your retro and kawaii inspired fashion accessory needs. They produce their own line of jewelry, hair accessories, and gifts, but also stock products by brands such as Tokidoki, Sanrio, Cute Plush, Lime Crime, and more!

Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the gorgeous Granny Cat Ring I received over the weekend from Maria at Locketship! Yep, I currently have an embarrassment of riches in the glitter kitty ring department - and I couldn't be happier! :3

Disclosure: I received these items for review and as gifts, but all of the thoughts expressed in this post are my own.

Luna's Apawthecary Review & Halloween Cat Bed Giveaway!

Looking for a cute and cozy cat bed that you and your kitties will love? Than look no further than Luna's Apawthecary, helmed by the fabulicious Katie Rose (yes, I've been watching too much Real Housewives of New Jersey), and her tortoiseshell cat, Luna!

The dynamic duo specializes in cat care products "made by hand, with love, meeting the highest standards of quality and safety and using only safe and natural ingredients." Katie does the design, while Luna acts as quality control, giving her paw print of approval to everything in the shop!

Katie started Luna's Apawthecary with the noble dream of wanting to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals, and 20% of all her sales are donated to local cat rescues, with this month's proceeds benefitting Heaven Will Wait Pet Rescue in Detroit, Michigan.

The bed also acts as a great "cat barrier." Notice Priscilla, left, giving Charlie the evil eye.

The ladies were kind enough to send over some treats for Charlie and Priscilla to sniff out, including the adorable Peanut Butter Jelly Time bed, along with a Jazzy Jingle Stick, Catnip Kitty Cookie, and some mice.

Charlie ensconced in the mouse's extra long tail, as jazzy jingle stick looks on

Modeling the catnip cookie on his head

I decided the best way to get an honest evaluation of the bed was to put it in Priscilla's favorite sunny spot, where she spends 39878876 hours a day napping. Sure enough, when I crept in one early afternoon to take a peek, she was fast asleep on her new catnip infused throne.

Another satisfied customer!

Just in time for Halloween, Katie Rose and Luna have generously offered one lucky Catsparella reader the chance to win a Skulls & Spiderwebs Cat Bed of their very own! The bed is super big and stuffed with catnip infused polyfil that your kitties are sure to love!

Charlie Goes Shopping on Wag.com

Wag.com recently reached out to me about trying their new online pet store, from the makers of Soap.com, Diapers.com, and YoYo.com. I generally don't do a lot of online shopping because I'm impatient, and hate paying shipping for something I can go pick up myself, however, their prices and selection looked good, plus they offer free 1-2 day shipping on orders over $49 (and $4.99 shipping on orders under that amount), so I consulted with Charlie who thought we should give it a shot.

The site is clean and easy to navigate, and they have thousands of different products available for pets in categories such as food and treats, feeding accessories, grooming, beds and furniture, toys, and more. Wanting to give as thorough of a review as possible, I called up the customer service line to ask about the fountain we were thinking about ordering, and the representative was very friendly, and able to answer my questions right away.

On Sunday night, we sat down to place an order, which consisted of a Petlinks System Dream Curl, Petmate Replendish Waterer, Kong Cat ZoomGroom Brush, and some filters for the new fountain as well as our current waterer.

Charlie submitted the order at 5:02 PM, and a little over an hour later I received an email confirming that the order had already shipped, as was due to arrive by 8 PM on October 4th! Sure enough, the box arrived yesterday as promised, at around 2 in the afternoon.

Petlinks System Dream Curl

I haven't tried the fountain yet, but the kitties are already loving the brush and the Dream Curl, especially. I thought that Charlie would be the only party interested in it, but Priscilla immediately began scratching on the top, before becoming obsessed with trying to catch the feather toy dangling underneath. There were even some fisticuffs last night when Charlie tried to get too close and ruin her good time.

Free box with every purchase! (Charlie sold separately)

I couldn't be more pleased with my Wag.com experience, and plan on taking advantage of their services in the future. I also love that you can use one shopping cart across all of their sites to hit your free shipping total, plus there's no product exclusions, so if you want to order some goodies for your cat from Wag.com plus some lipstick and laundry detergent for yourself from Soap.com, you can do so without worrying that your final purchase total will be under the limit.

Disclosure: Wag.com provided me with a gift certificate for their site in exchange for reviewing their services, however they did not tell me what to purchase, and all of the opinions expressed in this post are my own.

Walking with Charlie: RC Pet Products Cat Harness & Leash Review

Charlie Goes for a Walk

Charlie, at six, is still full of energy and up for any new adventure (or product review) that comes his way. While my two cats are both strictly of the indoor variety, I've been trying out different ways to bring some fresh air and excitement into their lives, and thought that he in particular would be a good candidate for leash training.

While we were inside, I put the harness on to let him get used to it, but when it became apparent that he wouldn't be walking anywhere (he was flopping around like a boneless creature), I decided to carry him outside to see if all of the wonderful new sights and sounds could entice (distract) him into going for a stroll.

Fortunately, it worked, and after convincing him to stop eating the grass for two seconds, we were on our way.

There are a few cat-only leashes and harnesses on the market, but we tested the RC Pet Products cat leash and cat harness in "Pirate Cat" print. While I love the cool patterns they offer, more importantly I was glad that both items were very sturdy, which made me feel comfortable that Charlie would be secure on our walk. If you're interested in learning more, or trying it out for yourself, you can search online, or check out the RC Pet Products website to find a retailer near you.

Disclosure: RC Pet Products provided me with a Pirate Cat Leash and Harness to review, but the opinions expressed in this post are our own. Meow!

Charlie's Amazing Treat Machine Rollers Review and Super Giveaway!

Cats like cardboard. Plain and simple. Buy them the fanciest toys, beds, gadgets, and gizmos, and at the end of the day you'll still find them curled up in their favorite box that you hauled home from Costco.

So, to help out box loving felines (and their frustrated humans) everywhere, I've recently been featuring earth-friendly cardboard cat products (See: Kitty Teepee and Geodome) that are not only cute and hip, but can also be recycled when kitty destroys them is done with the fun!

How they work

The latest product I've come across in this category is Amazing Treat Machine Rollers, which are interactive, 100% recyclable cardboard cat toys that offer the promise of two of your cat's favorite things: Treats and catnip!

Each box comes with cardboard sheets for assembling four rollers (with directions printed right on them), plus eight decorative wheels (that also serve to make the rollers more sturdy), and four organic catnip pouches.

Charlie always reads the directions before getting started

Once assembled, the holes in the rollers are big enough where the first few treats fall out very easily (Note: My cat may also be a genius), but once the amount of treats lessens, it becomes slightly more challenging. I must say it was hilarious to watch Charlie push the roller across the room to victory!

Observe:

*Nudge*

*Nudge*

*Nudge*

Out, darn treat!

I think the biggest mistake I made was trying the roller out with the treats before trying the catnip, because once he knew they were treat dispensers, the lure of catnip just didn't do it for him. However, since the initial trial, I've caught him tossing the empty toys around the house just for fun, so it goes to show that even without the promise of treats or catnip, they still offer a good time.

Overall, the rollers are deceptively sturdy, and if someone were to accidentally step on one, it wouldn't even break! They're a nice alternative to traditional cat toys, and also are good for a laugh while watching your confused kitty trying to liberate their treats.

Charlie takes his product reviewing duties very seriously

If you'd like to try Amazing Treat Machine Rollers out for yourself, you can purchase a box here for $7.95, PLUS the wonderful folks at Amazing Treat Machine are also offering a very generous 25% discount to my readers if you enter in code CATSPARELLA at checkout!

But wait...there's more!

Enter To Win!

On top of offering up a fantabulous discount, Amazing Treat Machine are also giving THREE lucky Catsparella readers the chance to win a box of Amazing Treat Machine Rollers to try out for themselves!

To enter, leave a comment on this post with your name and some way for me to contact you (email, link back to your blog or profile, Twitter, etc.).
The winners be will chosen in a random drawing next Wednesday, September 14th at 5:00PM EST. This giveaway is open to US readers only. One entry per person, please.

Good luck to all, and make sure to stop by Amazing Treat Machine to learn more about the rollers, and to check out the rest of their line of fun interactive cardboard pet toys!

Charlie and Priscilla Review Tipsy Nip Organic Catnip Products!

What's in the box?

The folks over at Tipsy Nip Organic Catnip Products out of Burlington, Vermont, recently offered to send over some of their fine merchandise for my discriminating feline product testers to review. With their company mission statement to, "create healthy toys that make cats insanely happy," how could I say no?

Charlie surveying his majestic bounty

They sent over a wonderful selection, that included the following products to sample:

Tickle Pickle: This tummy-hugging toy is stuffed with 100% eye-crossing high potency catnip, with no poly fillers, and comes in regular (6") and XL (woah!)

Tipsy Nip Ball: A nontoxic wooden ball infused with organic catnip, nesting in organic catnip.

Tuna Sushi: A purrlicious treat for cats! Made with Bonito tuna flakes, Nori Seaweed, and Tipsy Nip. Give as a treat or put on their food for added flavor.

Organic Tipsy Nip: A straight up jar of organic catnip!

Now let's hand it over to the professionals to get their opinion!

Priscilla couldn't wait to get the Pickles out of their packaging!

Charlie employs some double paw action with the Tickle Pickle and Tipsy Nip ball!

Two seconds after this picture was taken he knocked the entire jar over with his paw

Tuna Sushi = Kitty Crack

The Aftermath. Nipped out bliss!

The biggest hits in my house were definitely the Tickle Pickle, and the Tuna Sushi. Charlie isn't much of a foodie, but he was going after it likes nobody's business! I also love the idea of the wooden ball, but think it's something they'd have to get used to. I rolled it Charlie's way and he would watch it, or sometimes catch it, but after that, I'm not sure he knew what to do with it!

Overall, I was very happy with the items we received, and believe they stand up to the level of quality that is promised.

Both Charlie and Priscilla send many thanks to Tipsy Nip Organic Catnip Products for providing them with a fun, delicious, and catnip filled afternoon! For more information, or to purchase any items mentioned in this post, please visit their website at http://www.tipsynip.com!

Disclosure: Tipsy Nip Organic Catnip Products provided these items for review, but all of the opinions expressed in this post are my own.
