Katy Perry Teams Up With Wigged Kitties For Popchips To The Rescue Campaign

Katy and the Popcats

Sometimes when a bunch of awesome things get together, the result is greater than the sum of its parts.. like an ice cream sundae, for example, or this slightly confusing Popchips promo starring Katy Perry, cats in wigs, and a fat feline with a German accent.

Katy really channels her inner Catwoman in the spot, as she drives around in a kickass van, and can be seen rapping, slamming milk shots, and ultimately defeating "Fat Cat" (a creepy puppet/purveyor of greasy chips), with the help of her wigged out kitty crew.

The video is part of the Popchips to the rescue campaign, benefitting the ASPCA. Fans who visit the Popchips Facebook page can download a $0.50 cent coupon towards the all natural snacks, with each bag redeemed through 7/31 resulting in a matching donation to the animal welfare organization.

Happy National Hairball Awareness Day & Victory for Katy Purry and Sayreville Pet Adoption Center!

Fist pumps and paw bumps all around, y'all! National Hairball Awareness Day 2012 has finally arrived, and with it comes news that cat hair Katy Purry has taken the top prize in FURminator's celebrity "FUR creature" contest! What does that mean? It means that thanks to your help, FURminator is donating $1,000 to my chosen animal charity, Sayreville Pet Adoption Center in Sayreville, NJ!

From the bottom of my heart, I would like to sincerely thank every single person who took the time to vote, including my readers, friends, family, and everyone at SPAC. It means the world to me to be able to make this donation, and I couldn't have done it without your support!

Due to the current economic climate, as well as the loss of contracts with local municipalities (due in part to their refusal to euthanize feral cats), SPAC, which is the only no-kill shelter of its kind in the area, is still struggling to keep its doors open. If you would like to make a donation, or live in the area and are thinking of adopting a pet (perhaps one of the lovely kitties I featured during the campaign?), please visit their website for more information. They also have some great local fundraising events coming up that you might be interested in, including a yard sale at the shelter this Sunday, April 29th, "Dining to Donate" at On the Border in New Brunswick on May 1st, and Zumba (my fav!) in South Amboy on June 3rd!

As I've written in the past, my cats LOVE their FURminator grooming tool, and I'm not just saying that because we won their contest. Priscilla, the scardiest of scaredies who runs away if you even look at her sideways, comes running TOWARDS me when the brush comes out, and proceeds to rub her head against it before flopping over in her patented baby-seal-on-its-side pose. I also appreciate that it provides a nice opportunity for bonding time together, as she gets super purry and relaxed, while I generate materials for my next cat hair craft project.

Hairballs are a naturally occurring phenomenon in cats due to their propensity for self grooming, and according to FURminator, a cat can ingest up to 2/3 of their shed hair as they self-groom (blech!). As anyone who's ever had the pleasure of watching a fur induced hackfest or stepped in a gooey pile of fur detritus knows, hairballs are bad news. One easy way to prevent the nasty buggers before they occur, is to engage in regular grooming with a tool (like the FURminator, natch) which helps remove loose hair and undercoat without damaging or cutting the topcoat.

Thank you again to everyone for your support, and to FURminator for inviting me to take part in this awesome competition for the chance to win money for SPAC! If you're interested in picking up a FURminator deShedding product of your own (we use the Small Cat Short Hair deShedding Tool), they are available from authorized retailers such as pet specialty stores, vet clinics, groomers, PetSmart, Petco, and online at www.FURminator.com.

Disclosure: I received a FURminator grooming tool as compensation for participating in the National Hairball Awareness Day program, but all thoughts, opinions, and cat hair Katy Purry's expressed in this post are my own.

Katy Perry's New Meow! Perfume Bottle Is As Cute and Girly As You'd Expect It To Be

Around this time last year, cat mama Katy P. was revealing the bottle of her debut fragrance, Purr. Zillions of bottles sold later, and she's back for round two with the creatively titled, Meow! (apparently she insisted that an exclamation point be part of the name.)

Although it's essentially the same bottle as Purr, the Meow bottle is a decidedly prettier shade of purple, accented with crystal eyes and a metallic "M" neck charm. (I kinda love the glammy retro-vibe of it all). As for what's inside, the fragrance reportedly "commands a soft sexuality appropriate for use during any time of day" (ok), and consists of a "pairing of honeysuckle and pear with the backdrop of creamy vanilla, musk and amber."

Meow! is available for pre-order now in 1.7 or 3.4 oz sizes from Nordstrom.com, with an approximate ship date of November 30th. There's still no word on when the promotional images of Katy writhing around in a cat suit will be released, but I assume them to be forthcoming.

I want the bottle! Give me the bottle!

Taylor Swift and Katy Perry's Twitter Cat Chat

Meredith Swift

When two of the biggest names in pop music share a conversation about kittens on Twitter, you can rest assured I'm on it.

Last night MEREDITH SWIFT IS ADORABLE became a worldwide trending topic alongside other important hashtags such as WAYS TO MAKE ME MAD, National Sandwich Day, and JUSTIN HITS 14 MILLION FOLLOWERS, after Taylor Swift tweeted a picture of her admittedly adorable kitten, whom she referred to as "my new roommate, Meredith."

Fellow cat lover Katy Perry quickly responded to her friend with, "OH MY GOSH. Is this kitty for real?" with Swift swiftly confirming, "YES! And currently chasing her own tail. PS I miss you!"

If all that cute kitten and friendship talk weren't enough, the virtual conversation ended with Katy (theoretically) squealing, "I want to cuddle with that kitten so hard! Miss u :) K.I.T!"

Meredith, who was reportedly named after Ellen Pompeo's character on Grey's Anatomy, and resembles a Scottish Fold, joins fellow feline Indy as a member of the Swift family.

Aww, celebrities! Tweeting pics of their new pets and maintaining superficial friendships over the internet; They're just like us!

Update: The news just keeps rolling in! Taylor just tweeted another picture of herself with the kitten. I love the internet.

Katy Perry Wants You to Guess the Name of Her New Cat Themed Perfume

Hot on the paws of last year's successful launch of her signature scent Purr, pink haired cat lady Katy Perry caused a Twitter frenzy today over the release the perfume's highly anticipated follow-up.

This afternoon she frenetically tweeted, "PURR has a little sister! Tweet me your guesses with #NameThatPurrfume! 10 winners get perfume. 1 winner comes to the launch event in Dec!"

She expressed admiration for, but dismissed guesses such as Pussypower, Growl ("Only if it was a me in the morning perfume"), Furrytail, CatBerry, and Catnip ("Close...r"), but perhaps the "little sister" reference is the only real clue to be had. Obvious guesses would be "Kitten" or "Meow," but I'd love if she mixed it up with "Feline Fixation," "Miss Kitty," or "Katy Perry's Magical Pussycat Potion." Her cat's names don't offer many clues either, as "Purr" already covers Kitty Purry, and Krusty and Morrissey don't exactly evoke images a sexy feminine fragrance.

So what could Katy's new perfume be called? In all honestly, I don't care if she calls it "Cat Pee" or "Russell Brand's Armpits"...I just want to see what the bottle looks like!

What's your guess?

Update: Meow it is!

The Best Cat Apps for iPhone

Well, it finally happened. My ancient pink Motorola Razr took a trip over the rainbow bridge last week, and was quickly upgraded to an Apple iPhone.

Razr, we had a lot of good times together, and I'll always look back on those memories fondly. Remember how excited I was when we first met? You were always there for me during those important phone calls, and even forgave me that time I was walking outside, got startled by a spider, and dropped you on your pretty pink head.

Even when your back fell off last year and I taped you up, you kept on trucking, right up until the very end, when the simple act of sending a text message nearly drained your entire battery.

Admittedly, it was a bit spiteful of you to leave me now since the iPhone 5 is coming out in just a few short months, but it's ok. I forgive you, and hope you don't take how quickly and enthusiastically you were replaced as a sign of disrespect. It's just that me and iPhone 4 hit it off right away, and it just gets along SO well with my other friends, especially my bestie: MacBook!

Plus, I think you can appreciate that a phone that stop being manufactured in 2007 is not very app friendly, and as a blogger of cat culture, I have to stay up to date on these things. I mean, who else is going to report on the latest Talking Tom news, or inform the masses of the Kitty Wigs iPhone application?

***

Yes, friends. That was just my long-winded way of saying, "I finally got an iPhone!"

And with the way my brain operates, the first thought I had after the contract was signed was this: CAT APPS! There are, of course zillions on the market, and a cursory search of "cat" in the Apple app store produces an overwhelming, endless list that I cannot even to begin to explore on my own.

So for our purposes, this list is mainly focused on the most popular, interesting, and (sometimes) free cat apps for your phone. Note that it's not in any particular order, and I haven't tried all of these apps myself (yet), so check out the reviews, and use your discretion before buying them. Also, I hope to do more posts on this topic (or add updates) in the future, so please leave any recommendations and/or glaring omissions in the comments!

Now, without further ado: On to the cats apps!

CatPaint - Davander Mobile Corporation, $0.99

CatPaint promises that you can easily add a slew of kitties - 8 to choose from in all - to any image. It was brought to the forefront last year by songstress' Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, when the latter tweeted this image of the two palling around, with the caption, "Hanging out with @katyperry is super fun except for the herd of domestic cats that follow her around."

Since then, the app has added laser beams coming out of cat's eyes as an bonus feature, and has been adopted by other celebrity users such as James Franco and Kat Von D.

Kitty Wigs - Julie Jackson, $0.99

Kitty Wigs comes from Julie Jackson (love her!), creator and author of "Glamourpuss: The Enchanting World of Kitty Wigs." The cute, photo enhancing app allows you to place multi-colored wigs and funky glasses on yourself, the cat, or dog of your choice.

Talking Tom Cat - Outfit7, Free

I'll be the first to admit that when I saw some of these videos of a cat that repeats what you say and responds to your touch on YouTube, they freaked me out (Ok, they still do). But, Talking Tom still deserves a mention for being one of the most popular applications in the app store, and in fact, Talking Tom Cat 2 is currently in the ranks of the top 25 free apps.

It's also worth noting that this week it was announced the maker of the app, Outfit7, signed a deal with Hollywood agent William Morris in hopes of creating books, toys, and more based on the creepy character - He's not going away anytime soon!

Simon's Cat in 'Purrfect Pitch' - Simon's Cat Ltd, $0.99

Fans of the British comic about a misbehaving moggy, rejoice! This app is one part musical, and one part game: You can compose your own songs and watch as Simon's Cat sings them back, or play the game to have Simon's Cat test your ability to follow his lead in a series of musical challenges.

Nyan Cat: Lost In Space - Istom Games Kft., $0.99

It's still not entirely clear to me what the game is all about, but this "addictive" app has stellar reviews, and features Nyan Cat's doppelganger, Tac Nayn (aka Tac-9), which seems like it would make it worth the 99 cent price tag alone!

Friskies Wonderland Quest II & Friskies Call A Cat - Nestle Purina Petcare co, Free

These two free apps by the cat food giant, the first by any cat food company in general, aim to engage the pet owner, instead of the pet. Studies have even shown that they not only help improve sales, but also have a positive impact on perceived taste of Friskies cat food among consumers (really, people?).

Wonderland Quest II is a multi-level game where you must find the hidden game pieces before time runs out, and the recently released Call-A-Cat, reproduces the sound of a popping cat food can, shaking bag of treats, birds chirping, and more, to keep your kitty amused and confused for hours minutes?

MewMew Tower - B3 United Inc., $0.99

MewMew Tower is a Japanese game that challenges you to stack as many cats on top of each other as possible, forming a caterwauling tower high in the sky! I first learned about this fun app while doing a Cat Cupcake Tuesdays post back in March, when I found someone who had created cat cupcakes, inspired by the game!

Cat Translator - Brain Bender Consulting, $0.99

Cat Translator was created as an "entertaining and useful tool to help you learn Catspeak so that you can better understand and communicate with your cats." The app comes with a library of English phrases that are translated into meows, that play out loud.

Instructions warn against "confusing or stressing out your cat by playing the "angry" phrases while they are nearby." 10% of the proceeds from Cat Translator downloads are donated to Kansas City animal shelters and spay/neuter clinics.

Cat Piano - George Talusan, $0.99

Create you own meow-velous musical numbers using this app that is exactly what its name implies. One intrepid user even recreated Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream," in part, by using the iPad version of the app.

Hipstamatic - Synthetic Corp, $1.99

"Digital Photography Never Looked So Analog." While technically not cat related, the popular photography app is worth a mention for spawning its own single serving Tumblr site: hipstamaticat, where users submit pics of their own cats taken under the app's various old-timey lenses. Here, Priscilla got the Hipstamatic treatment with the default John S lens and Ina's 1969 film.

Instagram - Burbn, Inc., Free

Another similar photography app that's gaining traction in the blogging community is Instagram. The joyously free and easy to use app allows you to take pictures and then pass them through an array of different filters to change the mood and feel of the pic. I took this picture of Charlie and applied one of the filters, and kinda love the dreamy results! The application also enables you to create a profile, post and share your pics Tumblr style (or through Facebook and Twitter), and follow other users updates.

In addition, there's also a companion site, instac.at, where you can view an endless stream of cat photos taken with Instagram, at your leisure.

So help me out, you guys. What are your favorite apps? (don't say Words With Friends!)

Katy Perry's Cat Obsession

Katy Perry was interviewed for a recent issue of the British magazine More! (not to be confused with the American 40+ ladymag of the same name), where she dished about her love of cats.

She tells the mag:

"I am obsessed with cats. I'm kind of trying to make that cat-lady personality cool. I want it to be chic! Cats are like, 'You have to earn my affection.' And I really associate myself with that. People have to earn my affection, but when I give it, it's going to be good. I'm very independent like a cat too, and I do things in my own time. My cats have a feminine way, it's sexy."

Katy Perry's Cat Goes Wild For 'Purr'

Katy Perry kicks off her international "California Dreams" tour today in Portugal, and last night she tweeted a picture of her cat Kitty Purry clutching a bottle of her new feline inspired fragrance:

Shortly after, one of Katy's fans replied that her cat likes to snuggle with Purr, too!

So what do you think? Does your cat like to get cozy with your bottle of Purr? Although I mentioned it in my holiday gift guide, I'm sad to report that I still haven't gotten any yet! Should I be concerned that I'm depriving my cats of the purrfect cuddle partner?

Famed feline lover Katy Perry channeled her cat, Kitty Purry, in this provocative photo shoot for her upcoming fragrance, appropriately named Purr.

Metro.co.uk reports that Katy "got into character by crawling around on the ground alongside the cat-shaped perfume bottle."

Purr is scheduled to be released this November. There's no word yet on what the fragrance smells like, but if it comes in a cat-shaped bottle with diamond eyes - I really don't care!
