Cat Friendly Princeton + $100 AmEx Gift Card Giveaway!

I have partnered with Apartment Guide to serve as an Official Apartment Guide Pet Blogger! As an official blogger, I will be sharing articles and ideas for exploring your space, city and style.

This month I have been tasked with creating a city guide including restaurants and places I would recommend to guests coming to visit my town. Luckily, I am fortunate enough to live in beautiful Princeton, New Jersey, which I've learned some people don't realize is home of the prestigious Ivy League school of the same name (Yes, intellectuals besides the The Real Housewives of New Jersey and Jersey Shore folks frequent this fine state, too).

All joking aside, Princeton a scenic town filled with a good eats, awesome activities, and abundant ways to appease a raging sweet tooth. Now, I'm going to keep this cat related, of course, so here are some of my must-see stops for people like me with a thing for kitties, cupcakes, and all things cute.

The picturesque campus is open to the public, and it always feels like I'm walking on a movie set every time I set foot through its majestic gates. Be sure to bring your camera along to soak up the scenery, and stop by the numerous tiger statues (it's their mascot) to take a pic!

Niko Niko is the kind of boutique that I would love to open: It features trendy dresses and funky accessories, along with brands like Tokidoki, Harajuku Lovers, and Paul Frank. I make sure to stop in every once in awhile to see if they have any cool new cat clothing, as they've been known to stock feline inspired fashions you won't see anywhere else!

Located just next door to Niko Niko, Morning Glory is a haven for Japanese pop culture junkies, and is filled to the brim with Sanrio, San-X, My Neighbor Totoro, and more. They have kawaii stationary, buttons, and tons of other cute trinkets that will leave you saying "aww" every five seconds (which is what happens every time I visit).

Every Thursday from 11am to 4pm, there's a Farmer's Market in Hinds Plaza next to the excellent public library. In addition to local fruits and veggies, you just might find famous resident cat lady (and fellow Catster columnist), Sarah Donner, playing a gig, too!

Save your appetite up for dessert!
Princeton boasts a variety of excellent ice cream shops like The Bent Spoon (which hosts a rotating roster of unusual flavors like basil, lavender mascarpone, and bourbon sea salt caramel), Halo Pub (home of my beloved Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream), and Thomas Sweet. There's also the requisite froyo joints like Twist and Fruity Yogurt (a must try for their Bubble Tea), and the town cupcakery, House of Cupcakes, whose claim to fame includes being a winner on Food Network's "Cupcake Wars."

Stop by the local animal shelter, S.A.V.E., to socialize with some of their cats and dogs, or drive thirty-five minutes south to visit Tabby's Place, the cageless cat sanctuary located in Ringoes, NJ.

Located just a short drive away in Hamilton, NJ, this hidden gem is always a big hit. As the name implies, it's a huge outdoor park, filled with umm, well, sculptures (which is much more exciting than it sounds, I promise!), and is sure to delight guests of all ages. They also have live peacocks roaming around, and to keep this catty, yes, they have tiger statues there, too!

Another great aspect of living in or visiting this area is its proximity to New York City and Philadelphia (both are only about an hour away). Exploring NYC would be a whole other post, but if we're talking cats, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Philadelphia Zoo, where you can marvel at snow leopards, amur leopards, pumas, lions, amur tigers, and a black jaguar in the incredible Big Cat Falls habitat.

If you're looking for another fun day trip, Longwood Gardens is a bit of a hike (it's about a two hour drive to Kennett Square, PA from Princeton), but it's also worth the trip. Explore the grounds of one of the country's premiere botanical gardens, and see if you can spot one of the lovely real-life cats they employ as a form of "natural pest control"!

Charlie Goes Mobile With The Apartment Guide iPhone App

I have partnered with Apartment Guide to serve as an Official Apartment Guide Pet Blogger! As an official blogger, I will be sharing articles and ideas for exploring your space, city and style.

Remember a few months ago when Charlie's pad got an Extreme Makeover: Cardboard Box Edition? Well, being the mover and shaker that he is, Chuck is already thinking about moving up and out, which is why he agreed to help me review the Apartment Guide iPhone app to check out other box apartment rentals in the area.

Incorrect way to search

He needed a little extra help with the free download since he has no thumbs - plus, there was NO way I was going to give him my password after what happened the last time.

Correct way to search

The app offers the ability to do a simple search, or a nearby search based on your current location, which I think could be very useful if you are apartment hunting on-the-go. I also encouraged him to try out of the advanced search option, where he was able to select amenities such as "Pets" and "Fitness Center." ("But you don't even work out!" I said.)

In one example of just how easy the app is to use, Charlie's paws kept wandering across the touchscreen during out photo shoot, in which he initiated a nearby search that yielded results for a rental property (hilariously) called "The Mews." In fact, he was so adept at running searches, I think they should seriously consider changing their tagline to: Apartment Guide Mobile Apps: So easy, even a cat could use them™.

DIY Vintage Suitcase Cat Bed

I have partnered with Apartment Guide to serve as an Official Apartment Guide Pet Blogger! As an official blogger, I will be sharing articles and ideas for exploring your space, city and style.

My design project for month of May was to take advantage of unused space in my place, and update the area with new decor or furniture. For the challenge, I decided to take on a DIY project I had been meaning to try, and create a new piece of furniture for Charlie and Priscilla that could fit into any small open area, such as at the end of a couch, under a sunny window, or on top of a chair that is used more for decoration than for sitting.

I have been eyeing vintage suitcase pet beds on Pinterest and Etsy for awhile, and lucked out when my mom gave me one of her old suitcases that was the perfect size, and had the right look and feel for the project. (The best part is that you can use any small, unused suitcase that is taking up room in your closet, such as this one was in mine).

Many of the suitcase beds I saw online had feet or did not have lids attached, but I decided keep it as-is so I can still use it as a suitcase, if needed. However, as a safety precaution, I inserted a wooden dowel through the hinges so that the top of the suitcase stays open and can never slam shut.

With the suitcase lid firmly attached, I browsed through some designs for inspiration, and opted to accessorize the interior with a few trinkets, such as kitten buttons I received from my friend Luna of PloesiePoesie (the large one is actually a pocket mirror), old stamps, and Priscilla's toy mouse. When I felt like it needed an extra splash of color, I created the bunting, which was made out of a bit of felt and glue. To make the bed extra comfortable, I added a standard size pillow covered with a floral sham, although any extra fabric or old pillowcase you have laying around will do.

Overall, it was an easy project, and helped me make some extra room in my closet, plus gave me a cute conversation piece that can really dress up any unused area. It's also a great idea for if you're renting or living in a small space and don't have a lot of room to play around with, because you can stick it anywhere, or pack it up when it's time to go on vacation or move!

Pinterest Finds For Pet-Friendly Living

I have partnered with Apartment Guide to serve as an Official Apartment Guide Pet Blogger! As an official blogger, I will be sharing articles and ideas for exploring your space, city and style.

I'm a fan of Pinterest (the social media site where you can visually organize your interests through virtual pin boards) because it allows me to generate inspiration for blog posts, organize my ideas, and promote cool images and products that I'd like to share. That's why I was excited for my latest Apartment Guide article, when the brand invited me to contribute to their "Pet Friendly Ideas" board. My mission was to find and share fun home accents and accessories that are purrfect for any home, but focusing on ideas that would be especially helpful for renters and those living in small spaces.

Being a renter, I don't have much input into the color of my carpet and walls, so one way I like to bring my own personal style into the mix is through unique artwork. Society6 has a fantastic array of reasonably priced art prints that come in various sizes (and even framed, if you prefer), that will contribute to just the vibe you are looking for. I'm currently in love with the "Cat Power" print by Irina Sidorowicz, because of its unique use of color, vintage look, and quirky black Persian, whose mask matches its owner!

Petlinks System Dream Curl - Wag.com, $29.99

Part of apartment living or living in a small face is finding portable and reasonably sized items that serve more than one purpose. I mentioned the Dream Curl when we first got it last year, and am happy to report that Charlie still loves sitting on it and scratching away. The only casualty so far has been the toy feather underneath, which Priscilla the hunter made quick work out of.

Another fun way to punch up a small space is with funky pillows that can be easily switched out when you're ready to try a new look. Etsy has a nice selection of cat-themed pillows, but the colorful bunting and Parisian flair really made this one stand-out. (Plus, add your own pom-poms, and your cats are sure to love it, too!)

Why get a plain feeding mat, when you can get one that looks like a giant black cat head? Keeping with the Parisian theme, I also like ORE Vintage Parisian Cat Placement that will have your cats speaking French in no time. Miaou!

Tabby Cats Rule Night Light - Get To Know You Know, $22

My bathroom is right outside my bedroom door, and it gets really dark out there at night. If you are five-years-old like me, don't be afraid to add a cool kitty night light to keep away the ghoulies and/or prevent you from walking into things in the middle of the night. In addition to this awesome style, they also offer Calico Cats Rule, Soon..., and The Cheshire Cat designs to chose from.

BlanketID Tags - blanketid.com, $24.99 for a tag + 1 year of membership (discounts available for multiple years)

It's always a good idea to have some identification on your cat, particularly in an area where you're renting and may not know too many of your neighbors. While I'm an advocate of microchipping, blanketID is another innovative (and stylish) way to keep your kitty covered. Just pick out one of their cool designs, and register your cat's information online, including pictures and your contact info. One your pet is reported missing, blanketID.com automatically sends a broadcast email to local SPCA, animal hospitals, shelters, other local blanketID members. Conversely, if someone finds your pet, they simply have to visit the blankedID site and type in your cat's unique code to find out how to get in touch with you.

Cat-ula - ModCoth, $14.99

Ahh, yes. The Catula. I have coveted you forever! No matter where you live, you still have to eat breakfast and there's no reason it shouldn't be this cute. Eggs and pancakes will never be the same once your tend to them with your new feline flipper.

If you're renting (and live on the third floor, like I do), lugging heavy cat furniture around can be somewhat of an inconvenience. We all know cats love cardboard anyway, so why not create this elegant (and thrifty) DIY chaise from the Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories? I created my own cardboard box retreat for the cats a few months ago, and they are still enjoying it to this day. For the less crafty among us, Loyal Luxe also creates a fun line of cardboard cat shelters (like a Teepee and a Chalet), which can be folded down flat or recycled once its time to move.

Kitty Cat Handmade Linen Organizer - Hoganfe Handmade Originals, 29.98 (also available in black)

Storage is at a premium in most apartments, so it's always a treat to find solutions that blend into the decor instead of looking awkward and, um, storage-y. This handmade linen bin is not only super-cute, but purrfect for stashing anything from your latest knitting project, to an overflow of cat toys.

In addition to having a chic feline design, this three-in-one piece of cat furniture is a great space saver that you won't be embarrassed to show off. Kitties can sit or lay down on top, hang out on the fabric cat nap hammock underneath, or work those claws on the scratching board, instead of taking it out on your couch!

Blast From The Past: My First Apartment

I have partnered with Apartment Guide to serve as an Official Apartment Guide Pet Blogger! As an official blogger, I will be sharing articles and ideas for exploring your space, city and style.

The first time I had a place of my own was when I was transferred schools and had to get my own apartment because on-campus living options were extremely limited. The college was about two hours away from my parents house, so we took a weekend trip to check out rentals before the semester began. After looking at quite a few duds (living in some granny's house where I had to walk through her front door and go upstairs to an afghan covered attic bedroom wasn't gonna cut it), we had just about given up hope when we decided to meet with a realtor who immediately showed us the perfect place. It was the bottom floor of a two-story house, and I had my own private entry through the back door. It was small, but comfortable: I had a living room, bedroom, kitchen, and old-school pink bathroom (tiles and bathtub) that I really loved.

I didn't know anyone in the area when I moved in, and the first year was pretty lonely for me. It was around this time that my cat obsession had really gone into overload, and I seriously started thinking about adopting a kitty to make the second year a little more bearable. Shortly afterwards, I found Priscilla, and after settling in to my parents house for the rest of the summer, we moved back to the apartment together in the fall. The previous tenant had a particularly messy dog, so my landlord had initially instated a "no pets allowed" policy; However, having three daughters of his own, he had a soft spot for my situation, and his wife convinced him to let Priscilla stay.

I had always grown up with dogs and had never actually cared for a cat on my own before, so learning all of the intricacies of feline behavior from a months-old kitten was an adventure for both of us. I quickly learned that rolls of toilet paper must be locked up at all times, feeding time is on her schedule, not mine, and no surface was too high for her to scale. I remember being amazed when I walked into the kitchen one day and found her sitting on the highest cabinet near the ceiling, and freaking out as I wondered how I was going to get her down (she ended up getting down just fine on her own, of course).

Since the apartment was so intimate and we didn't entertain many visitors, Priscilla and I became practically inseparable. When she wasn't staring out the window in my bedroom, she was glued to my side. I'd wrap my arm around her like a teddy bear when we were watching TV together, and she would sprawl out in the wet bathtub after I had taken a shower to watch me do my hair by the sink. I would take her on trips to the pet store to pick up litter and other supplies (she wore a laughable fluorescent pink, rhinestone encrusted leash and harness but her paws never touched the ground) but knowing what I know now, I definitely would have tried to socialize her more often. Although those early days of solitude together are what helped bond us for life, I also believe it's what led to her antisocial attitude towards strangers today.

One particular incident that stands out from our time in the apartment was when I thought she had run away. The only entrance was through a sliding glass door that I would painstakingly slither out of to ensure she didn't escape (not that she even tried, really). One day something happened (the details are fuzzy) and for some reason I had felt quite certain that she had gotten out. I remember the sinking feeling in my chest as I ran out into the backyard to frantically search for her, only to turn around minutes later to see her curiously watching me through the glass from INSIDE the house.

Another time, one of my best friends from home came to visit and spent the night on the fold out couch I had in the living room. This wasn't a regular fold out - it was a weird IKEA deal, so basically it opened up into a mattress on the floor. My friend is NOT a cat person (which makes them drawn to him even more, I think), and in the middle of the night I heard a scuffle and came to see what was the matter. According to him, Priscilla, my sweet, innocent baby cat, had pounced on his head while he was trying to sleep, and would not leave him alone.

We only lived in the apartment for a short year before I moved out, and sadly, I have very few photos from this short, yet memorable time in my life (apparently no one had cameras in the early 00s?). It's funny that I actually remember very little about the first year I lived in the apartment without Priscilla, which I think actually makes a very convincing argument for the age old adage that a house is not a home without a cat.

Get Your Kitty Supercharged For Spring + $100 AmEx Gift Card Giveaway!

I've partnered with Apartment Guide to serve as an Official Apartment Guide Pet Blogger! As an official blogger, I will be sharing articles filled with tips for living on a budget.

It's springtime, and I'm officially done being cooped up inside - or at least ready to make time to step out for a few minutes and get some fresh air. But what about your indoor cats? It's not like they have the pleasure of visiting cat parks, and many only leave the house once or twice a year to go to the dreaded vet. Since my Apartment Guide posts are about living on a budget and keeping your cat happy and healthy in any space, I was inspired to offer of a few ideas on how to keep your cat physically and mentally stimulated this season, no matter what kind of environment you live in.

Charlie on-the-go!

Exploring the outdoors is a no-no for many indoor cats, but what if it can be done in a safe and comfortable way? Taking your cat for a walk on a harness and leash is a great way to help them burn energy and socialize, while also keeping them (and you) in tip top shape. Cat behaviorist and "My Cat From Hell" star Jackson Galaxy extolls the virtues of leash training, although he warns it may require some behavior modification on behalf of the owner and the cat. Last year, Galaxy worked with New York Times writer Stephanie Clifford to leash train her cat Mac, and also offered some tips on how to get started in the process. Before you set off on your journey, make sure you have the right gear, and choose a safe area away from free-roaming dogs. You'll also want to keep a close eye on your cat to make sure they don't attempt to climb any trees, or chew or ingest anything they shouldn't when they're out on the prowl.

For the cat who's not quite as active, a stroller is another possible way to give them the taste of the outdoors without really putting paw to concrete. Once again, it really depends on the personality of your cat, and what they feel comfortable with. My cat Charlie enjoys a short jaunt around the block where he can catch the breezes and check out the birds, but will start to fuss once the stroller stops moving. I've heard stories of other cats who are able to attend different events like parades and festivals in their strollers, and others still who don't tolerate the experience at all. Listen to your kitty (and your gut) to see what works for you, and prepare to have some fun with the neighbors when they ask to see your fur "baby"!

Sure your cat has a million and one toys, but are they the right ones? Out of the zillions of options in my house, Charlie's favorite (and cheapest) toy is still a plain old plastic spring. I wrote a post about how the original green coil took a permanent vacation a few months back, but since then a new package has been purchased, the contents of which are usually half missing. He literally plays with these things for hours on end, but I'm still not sure who gets more of a workout: Him running around and batting them all over the house, or me fetching them from under the furniture.

On the other hand, Priscilla doesn't touch them at all, and prefers to get her rocks off with a furry mouse that brings her immeasurable joy. The point I'm making is, if your cat's toys aren't driving them to pounce around like a kitten again, maybe it's time to do some experimenting to find out what does the trick. Try out different brands of catnip, get a wand (it will also give your arm a nice workout!), or invest in an electronic toy to rev up your cat's predatory instinct. Just like little kids, not all cats like playing with the same toys, so mix it up and open up a whole new world of fitness for your finicky feline.

Enter to Win!

Throughout the Apartment Guide How-To Guide for Living on a Budget series, I've given ideas on cool kitty decor (for cats and humans), offered ways to get your kitty cat craft on, suggested tips on moving with cats (presented by kitties in boxes, natch), and even fashioned Charlie his own DIY cat palace using little more than a discarded peanut box from Costo and some scrapbooking paper.

As a thank you for following the series, and to give you the chance to splurge on some goodies of your own, Apartment Guide has generously offered one lucky Catsparella reader the chance to win a $100 American Express gift card!

Six Thrifty Ways To Get Your Kitty Cat Craft On

I've partnered with Apartment Guide to serve as an Official Apartment Guide Pet Blogger! As an official blogger, I will be sharing articles filled with tips for living on a budget.

When it comes to budget-friendly kitty themed decor, getting crafty is the way to go. Not only will you end up with a super unique piece that you can't find in stores, but you'll also have the satisfaction of knowing you made it yourself.

To help get you started, I've rounded up a few of my favorite feline craft projects and kits, that will no doubt transform you into the crafty cat lady that the world already thinks you are!

1. Crafting With Cat Hair :// $9.58, Amazon.com
I've already written ad nauseum about my love for the book that shows you how to turn your cat's excess fluff into finger puppets and portraits, and am currently working on another cat-hair themed project I'll be be sharing with you soon. Best In Show: Knit Your Own Cat is also another book I've featured, if you desire working with yarn over fur when creating your kitty cat crafts.

2. Plush Cat Bed Knitting Pattern: // $5.99, Shiri Designs
Ready made cat beds and accessories can get super expensive, so why not save some cash and make them yourself? Does your cat need a hat? Yeah, there's a pattern for that. I found a tutorial on how to crochet an abstract cat afghan, too!

3. Crochet White Kitten Doll :// Free online guide, Instructables.com
Amigurumi is defined as the "Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures," but all I know is that they're super cute. While you wouldn't want to give these intricate dolls to your cat to slobber on, they're purrfect for decorating your home or office, or giving to your lucky friends as gifts. There are plenty of patterns and instructions online for trying amigurumi - including this precious "Mao Mao" white kitten doll tutorial for the more advanced artisan.

4. Marmaduke Tea Towel Cloth Kit :// $15.50, Sarah Young
I love kits because you don't have to worry about getting the right materials or spending extra cash on every little thing. This beautiful silkscreen design can be used as an attractive tea towel, or be cut out, sewn, and stuffed to make a stylish toy or cushion. For an equally adorable DIY project, I'm also a fan of the Make Your Own Kitten Sewing Kit by Nanette Regan.

5. DIY Cat Toy Kit :// $10, Miso Handmade
This do it yourself kit comes with everything you need to personalize a catnip heart with the name of your very own little heartbreaker, including pre-cut felt, catnip, and even a few pins and needles!

6. DIY Japanese Needle Felt Cat Kit :// $12.00, Hanami Boutique
Felted kitties are some of the most adorable little creatures I've seen, and these kits are a fun and inexpensive way to make any small area like a desk or nightstand just a little bit more cute!

Do you have a favorite kitty craft or project?

5 Pet-Friendly Moving Tips Presented By Cats In Boxes

I've partnered with Apartment Guide to serve as an Official Apartment Guide Pet Blogger! As an official blogger, I will be sharing articles filled with tips for living on a budget. This month, we're focusing our “How-To Guide for Living on a Budget” program on DIY projects and how-to tips.

Over the summer, I posted a delightful (if I do say so myself) video showing a bunch of very lucky of kitties exploring their new home for the first time. The post elicited comments on some of your own interesting moving experience, ranging from positive ("After a day of sniffing and investigating, they felt right at home!"), to one poor kitty who got so spooked by movers, she ended up in the HVAC duct for eight (of her owner's) tear-filled hours.

I was browsing through the Apartment Guide Blog and Moving Today website for tips on how to make your move with cats go as smoothly as possible, and found several articles dealing with finding the right pet-friendly apartment, to making sure everyone feels right at home in your new space.

Read on for more!

1. Write your pet's resume to help you rent an apartment: It's a pain to write up my own list of qualifications, and now I have to write one up for my cats, too? Actually, putting together a formal document of your pet's veterinary records, along with letters of recommendation (!) is not a bad idea, and could potentially help convince a wary landlord that you are a far more responsible pet owner than the crazy cat lady in Apt 2B.

2. Finding a pet-friendly apartment: Success! The landlord is convinced, but will you and your cat be happy in your new digs? Before signing the lease, consider if there are any sunny windows to nap in, and if you want to be the one lugging that 50 lb. bag of litter up three flights of stairs!

3. The do's and don's of moving pets: Ok, so you found your new apartment - but how are you going to get your cat (who is terrified of even stepping paw out of the house) transported there safely? Talk to your vet before you go - especially if it's a long journey - to make sure kitty is up for the trip, and be sure to have a sturdy carrier your cat will feel safe in. It's also important to have up-to-date ID tags just in case, and if your cat is microchipped, make sure to have those records updated, too.

4. How to help your pet adjust to a new home: As seen in the "Mean Kitty" moving video I mentioned earlier, one of the best things you can do to help acclimate your cat(s) to their new surroundings is to make sure everything is set up before they're introduced to the space. That way, they will be able to freely roam around, and getting a whiff of some of those familiar "smells" from home will go a long way in easing any stress or anxiety that may have come along with the move.

5. Stylish homes for your pet: As stressful as moving can be, one of the more enjoyable aspects is getting a fresh start when it comes to interior design. Once you've settled in, make you cat feel special by purchasing them a posh new bed, or discourage them from scratching up your brand new couch with an elegant scratching post of their very own.
